The Kringle Chronicles: The History of Our Famous Kringle and What Makes Ours Different

But where did kringle come from? And why is ours a little more unforgettable than the rest? Let’s dig into the sweet, flaky story behind our most beloved bake.


From Denmark to Wisconsin

Kringle has roots in Denmark, where it began as a pretzel-shaped pastry made with butter-laminated dough — layer upon glorious layer of richness. When Danish immigrants made their way to Racine, Wisconsin in the 1800s, they brought this old-world tradition with them. Over time, the shape morphed from twisted to oval, and fillings went from simple to indulgent.

When kringle was named Wisconsin’s official state pastry (2013), we knew it was time to craft our own version. Just like the state made kringle its own, Uncle Mike’s took it and raised the bar.


Our Signature Twist: More Butter, More Layers, More Love

Let’s get something straight: not all kringle is created equal.

What sets ours apart? A few things, actually:

  • Ridiculous Flakiness – We make our dough from scratch, using a labor-intensive lamination process that creates 36 layers. It takes time, but you can taste the difference in every buttery bite.

  • No Shortcuts, Ever – Each kringle takes three days from start to finish. That’s right — three days. Because good things come to those who proof.

  • Filled to the Max – We don’t skimp. Whether it’s raspberry, apple, sea salt caramel pecan, or our ever-so-popular Pumpkin Cheese kringle, we make sure every slice is loaded with bold, balanced flavor.

  • Honoring the Original – We’ve brought back the traditional pretzel shape, just like the Danish bakers used to make.


Award-Winning for a Reason

People started noticing. First locally. Then across the state. Then… boom — we were named “Best Kringle in North America”. Our kringle has also been named the Best Kringle in Wisconsin, voted the Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin, and has earned several other sweet awards along the way!

Since then, our kringles have shipped across the country, shown up on wedding tables, and become the go-to gift for just about every kind of celebration.
