Apple season is one of our favorite signs that fall is on its way. Each year, we look forward to receiving fresh, locally grown apples from Hillside Apples—and this year’s harvest is beginning to arrive.
Local Apples, Prepared Fresh
At Uncle Mike’s, we peel and slice our apples fresh rather than relying on canned or pre-sliced apples for our bakery items. Our team prepares fresh apples throughout the year, but during local apple season, we receive them directly from Hillside Apples, a local orchard.
We’ll continue using Hillside’s apples for as long as the orchard can supply them, which is usually through the end of December.
Working with whole apples requires more time and preparation, but we believe the flavor and texture they bring to our bakery make the extra work worthwhile. Each apple is prepared for the item it will become.

What We Make With Our Apples
Fresh apples are used in several Uncle Mike’s favorites, including:
- Caramel Apple Kringle
- Fresh-baked apple pies
- Apple strudels
- Caramel apples
Our Caramel Apple Kringle is baked without a filling, sliced open and filled with our homemade apple pie filling. We finish it with icing and a generous drizzle of caramel.
Whether the apples are layered into Kringle, baked beneath a golden pie crust, folded into strudel or covered in caramel, we want the apples themselves to remain the star.
A Taste of the Local Harvest
There’s something special about baking with apples grown close to home. Their arrival marks the beginning of an exciting season at Uncle Mike’s, filled with classic fall flavors and longtime customer favorites.
